ARCHAEOLOGICAL TEXTILE STUDIES IN PERU

JUNE 21 - JULY 3, 2010 | $1950

Join us for the CIPS Archaeological Textile Course this summer in Arequipa, Peru! Students will learn to identify, analyze and document the features of ancient textiles (fiber, spin and ply structure, weave structure, iconography, and various other techniques) by examining archaeological textiles from various sites in Peru and by learning how to spin and weave the Andean way. The course includes lectures on the art and archaeology of pre-Columbian Andean cultures and how they persist in modern textiles, as well as basic training in textile field conservation.

Monday through Friday mornings will be spent in the classroom on lectures and weaving tutorials, afternoons analyzing and conserving archaeological textiles at the CIPS repository. On some afternoons and on Saturday we will visit local museums and sites, including the Museo Santuarios Andinos, where the “Ice Maiden” Juanita is displayed. Evenings and Sundays are free for you to explore the beautiful city of Arequipa.

This course is suited to art and archaeology students, museum personnel and textile enthusiasts of any age. Academic credit is available for undergraduate and graduate students upon request.

Cost includes hotel in Arequipa (double occupancy), all meals Monday-Saturday, syllabus and course supplies, and transportation and site fees for all excursions. Costs do not include airfare to and from Arequipa, meals taken away from the group, Sunday lunch or dinner, bottled water, personal expenses, phone calls, room service, alcoholic beverages, laundry, airport taxes or insurance.
